Racing returns to Cheltenham on Friday and it’s Day 1 of their December meeting. ITV will be showing the last four races live so we’re back with some more outsiders. Liam Bramall has picked out three runners that could be overpriced and they include one in the Cross Country Chase at 66/1. Numitor (20/1, betfair) returned to winning ways with a good performance in a similar race at Wincanton last time out and the form has since been boosted by the third, who won earlier this week. A 3lb rise looks more than reasonable for that effort and there’s every reason to expect a similar performance here. Second off this very mark in a better race at Newbury in March 2023, the evidence suggests he’s fully capable of making the frame.
The Goffer (66/1, bet365) has been a bit out of sorts of late and that’s why he’s so overpriced. It’s important to note that the handicapper is responding accordingly and Gordon Elliott’s runner was fourth in the 2023 Ultima Handicap Chase off a 7lb higher mark. The Cross Country course is very unique and if taking to the fences, it could rejuvenate the seven-year-old.
Bhaloo (12/1, William Hill) made a good start to life over fences at Ascot last month and the return to hurdles can only mean that connections think he’s dangerous off this mark. This son of Sageburg also tries three miles for the first time and he remains thoroughly unexposed in handicap company. Nicky Henderson is in decent form recently and it would be unwise to rule out a big run here.
