Kempton has another meeting under the lights on Wednesday evening. Master trainer Charlie Appleby has been on fire at Kempton so far this season with a 38 per cent strike-rate. He’s had 12 winners from just 32 runners so it would be dangerous to take him on here. Added to this, he’s been in fine fettle in the last fortnight with a similarly impressive 37 per cent strike-rate. It must be significant that he sends just one runner to Kempton and it surely must be one to keep an eye on. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
Elegant Charm (11-2, bet365) has had two career-starts so far and improved substantially from first to second. The two-year-old filly didn’t show much on debut at Newmarket, finishing fifth of six and beaten by over 11 lengths. This form was subsequently boosted by the nine-length-winner who placed in Group 3 company at Goodwood next time.
That was definitely a learning experience for her though as she was much better at Leicester next time out. She was beaten four lengths into fifth but showed considerably more promise than at Newmarket. There’s plenty to improve upon as she’s definitely not the finished article. It seemed as if she was her own worst enemy as she raced far too freely and suffered at the end of the race as a consequence. Fading at the finish was therefore inevitable and she lost a couple of places.
Obviously there’s plenty more to come from this filly who having shown improvement last time is likely to continue progressing as she gains more experience. Dropping down to 6f looks like a sensible move for the time being. Hopefully she’ll settle better off a stronger pace and therefore be able to finish off her race properly. If the expected improvement comes, conditions look set for her to break the maiden tag at the third time of asking.
