The Aintree Festival is almost as popular with Irish trainers as Cheltenham is and subsequently, there are plenty of raiders running at the Merseyside track on Day 2. Some have better chances than others so we’ve picked out four of the more interesting contenders and combined them into a Lucky 15. Check out our free tips page for selections in every race at the Aintree Festival this week.
Romeo Coolio ran a cracker to finish third behind Kopek Des Bordes in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham. Always up with the pace, Workahead blew out a little earlier than Jack Kennedy would have liked, leaving him in the lead for longer than would have been ideal. That form is the best on offer and having already won a Grade 1 over hurdles, it will take a good one to beat him here.
El Fabiolo has been badly out of sorts for a while but if rediscovering his best form here, Willie Mullins’ gelding could win this impressively. He was exceptional in his novice chasing days and he easily dispatched Jonbon in the Arkle two seasons ago. A reproduction of that form would surely give him every chance and if any trainer can get the fire going again, it’ll be Mullins.
Blue Lord was a smart Grade 1 performer in the not too distant past and he’s a fascinating runner in the Topham Chase. Rated as high as 167 at the peak of his powers, it’s not hard to imagine him winning a handicap off 152. Obviously he’ll need to take well to the fences but if doing so, Willie Mullins’ 10-year-old is entitled to run a massive race.
Jacob’s Ladder is improving quickly and the step up to an extended three miles looks likely to suit, especially in these quicker underfoot conditions. Gordon Elliott’s gelding was beaten over two miles on his first start over hurdles but has won both starts over 2m4f since. This includes a comfortable success in Grade 3 company at Naas last time out and he looks ready to step up in grade once again.
