Bangor is situated in North Wales and as such, it’s one of the easier tracks in Britain for Irish trainers to send runners to. John McConnell is a regular raider on these shores and he’s set to send two runners over to Bangor on Wednesday. Here we take a look at their chances of coming out on top and one runner is a more likely winner than the other. Take a look at our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
Looks Matter could only manage fifth on her only start in point-to-points but produced a much improved display to finish second in a bumper at Hexham over the summer. She rallied well after being headed in the final furlong and only just failed to get back up, eventually going down by a head.
Joining McConnell off the back of that performance, she was well beaten in a maiden hurdle at Sligo in October. Her bumper run suggests she’s probably better than that form suggests, so we could see a much improved performance this time around.
Bodhisattva runs in Bangor’s feature race, the North Wales National, and the nine-year-old looks well treated on his best form. His sole success over fences thus far came in a Class 3 at Perth in May 2023 and he runs off a 7lb lower mark on this occasion.
McConnell’s gelding has slipped eye-catchingly down the weights recently and the form of his narrow second at Doncaster in December 2024 suggests he’s entitled to have every chance off this mark. Clearly he’s not the most consistent performer but he has it in him to run well.
