Course form is one of the most important factors to consider when attempting to pick a winner. All tracks have different layouts and varying degrees of stiffness. Newcastle lends itself to track specialists due to it’s noticeably stiff uphill finish. Spirit Of Ash (11-4, bet365) always saves her best for this track and has finished first or second in six of her eight starts here. This includes four wins and the most recent of those came over an extended 1m4f back in November and she’s currently on just a 3lb higher mark. She’ll need to prove her stamina for the extended two miles here but this is a good opportunity if she can get home.
Atrafan (11-2, bet365) certainly knows his away around this place, as the 10-year-old has raced here 22 times. Six of his eight career victories have come at Newcastle and the most recent of those came in January 2023. It was a fair effort on his first start for 224 days at Southwell last time out and he’s entitled to improve for the run. It would be no surprise if this horse was to go close here.
Sydney Bay (5-1, bet365) has been in fine recent form at Newcastle and his form figures here since joining Geoffrey Harker’s yard in October are 112. Last seen here finishing a close second off a 1lb lower mark in November, the drop back to 6f should suit. There’s more to come from this five-year-old and he can win more races at this track.
