There’s a baffling gamble going on at Limerick on Tuesday morning. One runner with very little to show in four starts so far is subject to a major market move. Gavin Cromwell is looking to repeat the trick he pulled off on Monday, winning another handicap with a horse who hasn’t shown much. It’ll certainly be interesting to see the outcome of this gamble as it’s hard to envisage where it has come from. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
Pont Audemer (4-1, bet365) was opened up at 14-1 on Monday evening and sustained market support has seen its price slashed into a mere fraction of that. Currently, the best available price is 4-1 but he’s as short as 7-2 in places. The four-year-old gelding has plenty of improvement to find on the evidence of his four hurdles starts so far.
Gavin Cromwell’s charge started off in a three-year-old hurdle at Listowel where he finished last of 13 runners and beaten by 60 lengths. It’s also worth noting that the winner of that race has been found out in higher grades since. Jumped poorly when 14th of 16 at Gowran in a maiden next time and the market didn’t expect much as he was 80-1. Managed to half his at Galway next time when 10th by 31 lengths.
There were tentative signs of improvement at Limerick on handicap debut last time out when a 23-length 11th of 18. He was tenderly handled that day and a big price again at 40-1. The money has come for him however so it could well be a completely different story this time around. Someone somewhere knows something it would seem and you can never rule out a successful gamble in Ireland.
