Ruby Walsh was one of the best jockeys to ever ride around Cheltenham and no one has ridden more Festival winners than him. He’s a man that knows what he’s talking about and his opinion is well respected within the racing community. That’s why it could be worth taking note of this runner on Friday as Walsh is convinced the horse is going into the winners’ enclosure. MyRacing will provide free tips for every race at the Cheltenham Festival and our Day 4 selections are available here.
Galopin Des Champs is the horse in question and the two-time Gold Cup winner will be looking to join the likes of Arkle and Best Mate on three. Barely putting a foot wrong this season, he needed the run at Punchestown but has been at his imperious best in two subsequent starts.
Walsh isn’t the only one who sees him as banker material and it’s easy to see why. The former jockey said said: “He’s the best horse, he’ll win the race, what you don’t want is bad luck. So that’s what I think, he’s dead straightforward, he has a great mentality, great way of going, touch wood he’s a solid jumper, stays, has a turn of foot, pick a hole in him?”
The race has cut up a fair amount this year, with Fact To File being rerouted to the Ryanair Chase. His stiffest competition is the improving Banbridge who picked them off to win the King George last time out. Joseph O’Brien’s gelding will need to prove his stamina but will surely be in the mix if getting the trip.
