Few owners are as recognisable as JP McManus, as the Irish businessman is usually the top owner on both sides of the Irish Sea. His familiar green and gold silks are often worn to victory at all the big meetings. McManus will undoubtedly have a strong team to aim at the Cheltenham Festival in a couple of months so we’ve picked out four of his horses who could be worth backing at the moment. Trained by Oliver Greenall & Josh Guerriero, Jagwar was a comfortable winner of the TrustATrader Plate at the Festival last season. He made his seasonal reappearance in the December Gold Cup last month and ran a solid race to finish third. Improvement seems likely and he’s rightfully prominent in the betting for several handicaps.
Dan Skelton’s stable star hasn’t been seen since his mishap in the Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle in November. In front when falling at the second-last, it’s reasonable to assume that he would have gone close. Perhaps a visit to Cheltenham for trials’ day is on the agenda and he remains a serious Champion Hurdle contender.
Nicky Henderson’s gelding has established himself as a serious contender for the Stayers’ Hurdle, after winning the Long Walk last time out. He’s improving with every run this season and you wouldn’t want to rule out further progress. Currently available at around 7/1, that looks like a decent price.
Willie Mullins has dominated the Triumph Hurdle in recent years and he appears to have another live contender in the shape of Narciso Has. The French import looked in need of the run when second on stable debut at Fairyhouse but left that run well behind him at Leopardstown over Christmas, where he won a Grade 2 by 11 lengths.
