Heavy ground at Punchestown? Here are three horses who will love the conditions

There’s just the one meeting taking place in Ireland on Wednesday and it’s a National Hunt card from Punchestown. We have seven races to look forward to and the feature race is the Grade 3 Quevega Mares Hurdle. Conditions are going to make it hard work and the going is officially described as heavy. With that in mind, we’ve selected three runners who have been successful in the conditions before. Take a look at our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

2.10 Punchestown

Mossy Way was an impressive winner of a bumper on heavy ground at Limerick in November and the gelding bolted up by 27 lengths that day. Contesting a Grade 2 last time out, he makes the switch to hurdles here and 2m4f looks like a good place to start. This task should be a lot easier and a big run could be on the cards from the six-year-old.

2.45 Punchestown

Cousin Kate earned her first success in handicap company on heavy ground at Limerick on Boxing Day and completed her hat-trick in similar conditions at the Dublin Racing Festival. Denis Hogan’s mare has only lost once on heavy ground and it was a very narrow defeat. Her most recent success suggests she’s ready for this foray into graded company and further progress can’t be ruled out.

4.15 Punchestown

Johnny Cakes is the only runner in the field to have won on heavy ground before and that victory came over course and distance last season. He was an impressive winner that day and although he’s now on a 10lb higher mark, the seven-year-old should deal with conditions better than most.
