‘He got better with every yard’ – Liam thinks 16-1 Derby outsider has a big chance ⭐

The Epsom Derby is a little over two weeks away and the market has taken shape now that the significant trials have taken place. Now that the Guineas, Chester, York and Lingfield are out of the way, final preparations will be made over the next fortnight for the most prestigious race of the season. One particularly smart trial winner looks significantly overpriced at 16-1. Check out our free tips page for content across all British and Irish racing.

‘The further he goes, the more he’ll improve’

Star Of India (16-1, William Hill) won the Dee Stakes at Chester on his last start to win by just shy of three lengths. The most impressive aspect of this performance was the way he got better and better with every yard and the further he goes, the more he’ll improve. It’s likely that he would have learnt a lot that day as it was just his third career start and further progress looks probable.

He looked outpaced before staying on strongly and pulling away at the finish when winning his maiden on debut at the Curragh. Consequently, it was no surprise that he lacked the pace to compete with Native Trail in the Craven on seasonal debut. The step up to 1m4f looks like an absolute must for this horse who still looked outpaced at times at Chester.

This colt is a regally bred half-brother to Phoenix Stakes winner Sudirman. However, he clearly takes after his sire, the late great Galileo rather than his speedier dam. Winning a Derby on just his fourth career start is  a substantial ask but he could possess the quality to do just that.
