There’s a substantial gamble underway at Wetherby on Sunday. One runner, who was available at 28-1 on Saturday evening, has been the subject of sustained market support. The horse in question’s best available price is just 11-1 and is generally a single-figure price. Making its first start as a three-year-old, this is also the horse’s handicap debut. This makes the move even more interesting, as the runner is an unknown quantity in this sphere. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
Seraphia makes her handicap debut for Michael Bell here and she didn’t show a great deal in three starts in maiden and novice company. She made her debut in a Newmarket maiden back in September and those races are often hard to win. It was a disappointing effort however and she came home last of the 12 runners.
Managing to beat one home over 6f at Yarmouth next time, she also halved the deficit between her and the winner. Connections decided to go back up to 7f at Kempton on her most recent start and it was a similar story to her debut.
Trying a mile for the first time here, there’s evidence in her pedigree that the new trip will suit. Her dam won over a mile, in a short racing career for Sir Michael Stoute. The sustained market support indicates that significant improvement is expected now that she tries handicapping. There’s also always a chance that she’ll improve from two to three. This opening mark of 49 is suitably low and she can certainly build from it, if taking well to handicaps.
