George Boughey sends one runner on the 710-mile round trip to Hamilton

Simply getting a horse to the races is a costly endeavour these days, as expenses continue to rise. It’s therefore usually worth noting when a trainer sends a small number of runners to a track which is particularly far away. That’s the case on Thursday as Newmarket-based trainer George Boughey is sending one runner all the way up to Hamilton. Connections will be after some compensation as it’s a 710-mile round trip. 7.15 Hamilton

Mutamanni is the horse in question and he arrives with every chance upon his hat-trick bid. Showing signs of improvement with every run, he got off the mark in a Brighton maiden on his penultimate start. The three-year-old made all the running and comfortably held off the challenge of the runner-up.

It was a similar story on handicap debut at Leicester next time but he only just about held on under Billy Loughnane. He showed a good attitude that day and that race was harder than the previous one. A 5lb rise will obviously make things harder but his profile suggests there’s more to come and it would be dangerous to rule out further progress.

Whilst Boughey has drawn a blank with three runners at Hamilton so far this year, his record here over the last five seasons is very healthy. His strike-rate is a very solid 36 per cent, with five winners from 14 runners in that time.

Undoubtedly the plan will be similar to what it was on his last two starts and jockey James Doyle will be looking for a sharp break in order to pull off another front-running victory.
