Sandown has been a happy hunting ground for Gary & Josh Moore so far this season and they are the leading trainers at the track. With six winners from 10 runners, a strike-rate of 60 per cent is not to be sniffed at. The pair are set to send four runners to the Surrey track on Saturday so we’ve assessed their chances and combined three of them into a massive treble. Nelson Gate (40/1, bet365) had eight starts on the Flat and was a nose away from winning over 1m4f at Kempton in August. He showed some potential when second on his first start over hurdles at Fontwell in November, although he was very below-par at Newbury after that. This looks like a warm maiden hurdle but the 13lb allowance should even the odds.
Kotmask (12/1, bet365) won a decent race at Ascot off a 1lb higher mark last season and he looks very well treated on that evidence. It remains to be seen if he’s as effective over this shorter trip but he ran well enough on his penultimate start and a big run can’t be ruled out here. The eight-year-old did win over course and distance back in January 2024.
Poncho (13/2, bet365) is a useful dual-purpose performer and he won nicely at Plumpton on his latest start over hurdles in November. Keeping on well after the last to score by three lengths, the handicapper has responded with a 7lb rise but there could well be more to come on that evidence.
