Who would have thought that the biggest gamble of the day on Derby day at Epsom would be in an amateur riders’ handicap hurdle at Hexham? The closing 2m7f contest on the card only sees six runners go to post, and William Young’s Shantou Moon has come in for some heavy support.

Backed from a high of 11/1 last night into a current top price of 10/3 with one firm as short as 12/5, connections must feel today is the day for their runner. A winner of a 3m1f handicap hurdle at Catterick in January from a mark of 89, he is still 4lb higher in the weights now but Dominic Hislop takes off 7lb in the saddle.

Hislop is inexperienced but he did ride a winner on the Flat at Musselburgh back in October so he known how it feels to ride a winner. Shantou Moon was trained by Tristan Davidson up until recently and he had his first start for his new yard at Cartmel last week. He never got involved on the day but maybe they just wanted to get a run into him before they had a pop today.

This is an interesting developing gamble and best of luck if you decide to have a punt.
