There’s a substantial gamble underway at Warwick on Tuesday. Peter Bowen runs one in the final race of the day whose price is continuing to collapse. It’s the Poundland Foundation Proudly Supports Kits 4 Kids Mares’ Open NH Flat Race and Peter Bowen’s filly will be looking to win on her first start under rules. Gladys Eva Jane opened up at 22-1 on Monday evening but has since seen her price capitulate. She has had just one start in a point-to-point over two miles at Bredwardine when finishing fourth of six and was beaten by seven lengths. It’s hard to know how strong that form is but the second has since disappointed in two Worcester bumpers.
The filly would have learnt plenty from that experience and better can be expected here. Bowen is a shrewd operator and it’s very conceivable that he can unlock some progression as she makes her rules debut. Undoubtedly, a big step forward will be needed but that certainly isn’t out of the question. You could hardly ask for a better jockey on board as the excellent James Bowen takes the ride.
Her breeding suggests she should be capable of winning races such as this. A five-time winner, her dam Aphrodisia stayed as far as 1m5f during her career. Alongside this, her sire is Scorpion, a proper National Hunt stallion who won the St Leger during his racing career.
Whatever the outcome, the sustained market support for this very inexperienced horse making her bumper debut is entirely fascinating. With significant money coming, there will be plenty of people keeping an eye on Warwick at 5.20 on Tuesday evening.
