Keeping an eye on the markets is a good idea when looking for a winner. Although there are no guarantees, it gives an indication for the level of confidence behind a horse. The Irish do love a big gamble and the money has come for one horse in particular at Cork on Thursday. Trained by Thomas Cooper, the horse in question was available at 25-1 the previous evening and sustained support has seen it plummet into just 10-1. Saint Dona is the subject of the gamble and she’s already a winner this season. Her last two efforts have been somewhat disappointing but they came in very hot races and her mark has slipped as a result. She wasn’t too far behind Good Time Johnny at Leopardstown back in December and he went on to win the Pertemps Handicap Hurdle Final at Cheltenham last week.
It took her a while to get the hang of things over hurdles but the penny did drop in the Autumn. The mare was only beaten by a neck when second at Clonmel back in October. Getting off the mark at Thurles next time, she was an impressive winner when upped to 2m7f in November. Although the form of that victory doesn’t stand out, she could hardly have been more impressive as she made all, travelled well and won by 25 lengths.
This race represents a drop in class and she should find life easier in this company. If she can reproduce a performance similar to her maiden hurdle win, she must have a massive chance off a mark of just 114. There seems to be some logic behind this gamble and this could be one to keep an eye on throughout the day.
