Gamble alert: 33-1 shot backed into just 9-1 at Hereford on Thursday 🚨

It’s always a good idea to keep an eye on the markets as you can learn plenty from doing so. Although there are never any guarantees in this game, it can give you a solid idea of the level of confidence behind a horse. There’s one runner at Hereford on Thursday that is the subject of a substantial market move. The horse in question was available at 33-1 on Wednesday evening and the best current price is a mere fraction of that at 9-1. Mattie Ross is the horse in question and it’s slightly perplexing as to why she was 33-1 in the first place. Richard Phillips’ mare was a very useful bumper horse and was twice a runner-up, before getting off the mark in good style at Newton Abbot in July of 2021. Clearly she has ability and an engine, despite the fact that the form didn’t amount to much.

A close third on her hurdles debut at Huntingdon in March 2022, that was another fair effort. It would be very harsh to judge her too strongly on her latest run at Doncaster. The eight-year-old had been off the track for 649 days and was very much entitled to need the run badly.

Significant improvement could well be on the cards here and it appears the market agrees that progress is forthcoming. She’s had almost three weeks to get over that run and her best form suggests that she’s capable of running a big race here. Sam Twiston-Davies is an eye-catching jockey booking and it’ll be interesting to see how the gamble pans out.
