‘Forget about the high numbers’ – Four horses with a low draw at Beverley

Beverley Racecourse

The draw bias at Beverley is one of the most severe in the country, especially in races over shorter trips. Beverley’s undulations mean those with a wide draw are disadvantaged by starting lower down the hill, so you can forget about the high numbers. With that in mind, we’ve picked out four runners on Friday’s card that have very favourable low draws and should therefore have a significant edge over their rivals. Bacor breaks from stall two and that gives her an advantage over Hilary Needler winner Perfect Part, who is drawn out in stall eight. George Boughey’s filly was an impressive winner at Ripon last time out and she should go close once again, if taking another step forward here.

Ventura Express was a winner on seasonal debut at Pontefract in May and was put up 3lb as a result. Things didn’t go to plan in a higher grade at Thirsk next time and the drop in class combined with a 1lb drop in the weights should make all the difference. There are no excuses from stall two and Paul Midgley’s seven-year-old should make the frame at the very least.

Tees George will be unleashed from stall three and a return to winning ways could be on the cards. Adrian Nicholls’ four-year-old was last successful in a seven furlong handicap at Newcastle in September and was beaten half-a-length when second there over a mile recently. A stiff extended 7f looks perfect for him and he should be there or thereabouts.

Oceanic Wonder has the prized inside draw and she ran a fair race when third over a mile at Wetherby last time. Yet to get off the mark, she was a somewhat unfortunate second in a course and distance nursery last summer off a 9lb higher mark. Tim Easterby’s filly would surely have every chance here if producing a similar performance.
