The ground is forecast to be very testing at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday which is unusual for this time of the year. With that in mind, it should obviously pay to follow horses with soft or heavy form in the book. You will need to be a fit horse to get home in these conditions so backing something off the back of an absence is not advisable. Look for a horse that’s fit, ready to go, and loves the mud flying in the air. Let’s take a look at our three picks below.
It has been a very positive start to the year for Amo Racing and their recent winner Sir Rumi could follow up for trainer Richard Hannon. The son of Gleneagles loves heavy ground and was a nice winner over 1m4f at Epsom in the mud last month. If this hasn’t come too soon, he rates as the one to beat.
Belhaven won three times last year and left her poor reappearance run well behind when hammering the reopposing Sly Madam and Farhh To Shy at Nottingham on heavy ground when last seen. This is tougher but she will act on the surface and she looked like a very progressive horse last term so she is worth another chance.
He might have the burden of top weight but Spycatcher loves the mud and could be a class above his rivals in this big handicap. He won fresh again this year when landing a conditions race at Thirsk over 7f on heavy ground last month and there could be more to come.
