‘Experience is a big bonus’ – 66/1, 25/1, 22/1 and 20/1 Aintree Day 1 outsiders

There’s still life in the National Hunt season in Britain and the second major spring festival takes place at Aintree this week. The Grand National is the big one on Saturday but we have two days of excellent racing to look forward to beforehand. Day 1 offers up a feast of top quality racing and there are plenty of each-way opportunities to exploit. Here are four potentially overpriced selections to consider on Thursday and they include a massive 66/1 shot in the opening race of the day. Take a look at our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

1.45 Aintree

Lord (66/1, bet365) has already had seven starts over hurdles and that experience is a big bonus in a field full of young horses who are still learning. Donald McCain’s gelding has won four times and was victorious in a course and distance Listed contest on his penultimate start. Don’t underestimate him.

3.30 Aintree

Thunder Rock (20/1, bet365) is thriving in the hunter chase sphere this season and has won his last couple of starts with plenty in hand. Stamina is key on this course and the fact that he’s a Listed winner over just shy of three miles certainly stands him in good stead here.

4.40 Aintree

Wonleg (22/1, Betfred) is the lesser fancied of Henry de Bromhead’s three runners but he was a solid third in a warm race at Leopardstown over Christmas and the runner-up boosted the form with a good run at Cheltenham. Patrick O’Brien takes 5lb off and the best is yet to come from him over fences.

5.15 Aintree

Divine Diva (25/1, Boylesports) represents the Dan Skelton yard and although Harry Skelton has picked her stablemate, she was a solid third on debut in a Listed contest at Cheltenham in November. Improvement seems likely and she can make the frame if finding some.
