Unbeaten in her last eleven starts, the Queen of the Turf Enable bids to cement her place at the top of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe market in the Yorkshire Oaks at the Ebor Festival. Although facing just the three rivals, it’ll be no cakewalk with Magical and Lah Ti Dar bidding to spoil the party. Our Yorkshire Oaks tips are on site now, while we take a look at the history Enable has made thus far, and the history she could be about to make!
On paper, this is likely to be a rematch between Enable and Magical, with Aidan O’Brien’s charge clearly needing to pull out something extra. They first met at the Arc, where Enable toughed out to score while Magical could only manage tenth. They clashed again at the Breeder’s Cup, where Magical did get closer, but she was always being held in second. Even with ten furlongs not suiting Enable, she still managed to once again brush aside Magical to win at the top level.
With all that in mind, it’s very difficult to suggest the result will be different, and although it won’t be a cakewalk for John Gosden’s star, she should have no problems sweeping aside Aidan O’Brien’s pesky challenger once more.
By all accounts, this should be Enable’s final preparation for the Arc, and her farewell to Britain, at least on the racecourse. Although Gosden has acknowledged in interviews that there are plenty of pitfuls in a potentially trappy contest, as stated above, you’d have to be hugely surprised if she arrives at the Arc with her unbeaten run in pieces.
It’ll be a sad farewell to one of the best horses to grace a British racecourse, and she’ll be fondly remembered as a hugely successful, gutsy and majestic beast whose talents were unequaled for much of her career. Although history may say that three Arcs is too many (see below), Enable has laughed at the history book a few times already!
The ultimate task, and the last of her career, will be claiming a third straight Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. While seven horses have won the race twice, none of them have been able to gain a third. It’s very easy to put things into perspective with Treve, who won in 2013 and 2014, arriving at the 2015 renewal as a five-year-old and the even-money favourite, just like Enable. She ultimately failed to capture a third Arc, and ended her career rated 126, the rating Enable currently sits on.
Although it’s very easy to draw parallels, Enable has been a different class in 2019 and showed all her heart when landing the King George ahead of Crystal Ocean. She’s the Queen of the Turf for a reason, and despite history speaking against her, she’s used to defying that.
