‘Early pace can be crucial’ – Three front-runners to follow at Catterick on Wednesday

Catterick is a very sharp track and it is difficult to win from the back provided the pace-setters don’t go off too quick. Early pace can therefore be crucial, so with that in mind, we’ve selected three horses that will be up with the pace throughout. This could prove to be a significant advantage so they’re well worth looking out for. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

4.55 Catterick

Ready Freddie Go probably wishes he could race at Thirsk all the time, having won five times there. Ollie Pears’ six-year-old is a course and distance winner here too however. That success came off a 2lb higher mark back in June 2023 and he’s entitled to go close on that evidence. Having returned to form with victory at Thirsk when last seen, he’ll be attempting to make all once again.

5.30 Catterick

Profiteer has been pretty consistent this term and he won at Thirsk over 7f in June. His neck second off a 2lb lower mark over this trip at Nottingham at the start of the month is the standout piece of form however, as he led the field at a strong pace that day and was only just caught on the line. The fact that he stays 7f means a strongly run 6f is no problem and he’s likely to be right up with the pace.

Malham Tarn Cove doesn’t always do himself any favours at the start of his races and can be slow to get going. His best recent piece of form was his success over an extended 5f at Bath in May when overcoming an early stumble to quickly take the lead before going on to score comfortably. The five-year-old’s fate will probably be decided early on but he can run a big race if getting to the front early.
