The cold weather is having a massive impact on racing across Britain and Ireland at the moment. However, there’s a hot double gamble taking place at Cork on Sunday which could thaw ice itself. Emmet Mullins has two runners on the card and both are the subjects of huge gambles. Both have gone from double-figure prices to market leaders. Hardy Bloke has been backed into 9-4 having been available at 12-1 the evening before. The gelding was a well beaten fifth at Gowran on seasonal debut last time out and will need to find significant improvement to feature here. His best effort to date came at Clonmel last November where he was a six-and-a-half-length third in a maiden hurdle. Then followed three hard tasks in beginners chases in December of that year. It was a surprise that the handicapper didn’t drop this horse a pound or two for that latest effort. Sustained support is coming from somewhere despite there being little reason to be confident of a victory here.
A Cheap Thrill is subject to an even larger gamble than his stablemate. Running in the same colours, he was available at a whopping 20-1 on Saturday evening. Now the horse’s best available price is 7-4 which is a monumental market swing. This horse has shown even less than Hardy Bloke on the track so far, failing to place in ten starts. Despite the fact that he’s not even seemingly well-treated, the market support is continuing to flood in. Something is happening at Cork and if this horse lands the double, there will be pandemonium. Any number of pounds of improvement will be necessary to score here but the market would suggest that it’s forthcoming.
