He has his quirks but the return to Doncaster is a big plus for Canelo. Fourth in this race last season from a mark eleven pounds higher than this, late mistakes extended the distance he was beaten.
That is one of three runs at this track so far in his career, producing the top RPR of his life over both hurdles and fences at Doncaster. His fourth in this last year the other effort and even that was his third best chase RPR.
It’s fair to say that he has been a long way short of his best in three starts this season but the handicapper has given him a chance and if he is to bounce back to form, the chances are it will be at Doncaster. – Matt Newman
The big race of the day is full of well-known staying chasers but down at the bottom of the weights, it’s hard to ignore Cap Du Nord. Trained by Christian Williams, he’s a big player carrying just 10 stone and Jack Tudor takes off a further 3lb.
Cap Du Nord was sent off the 4-1 favourite for this contest last year and finished third to Takingrisks. That was from a 10lb higher mark so to say he is well treated would be an understatement to say the least.
In November, he was sent off a well backed 9-2 joint-favourite for the Badger Beer at Wincanton and finished fourth to the reopposing Rocco. Connections feel that there is a big race in him and from such a low weight here, they will surely have to feel like Saturday is the day that he gets the job done. – Adrian Wall
