David Pipe sends a rare runner on the 710-mile round trip to Newcastle on Thursday

Somerset-based handler David Pipe hasn’t sent many runners up to Newcastle in recent years, which is understandable. It’s a 710-mile round trip and Pipe has sent just two runners there in the last five seasons. He’s set to send an improving chaser up to Newcastle on Thursday and Harry Cobden also heads up just to ride the horse in question. Chemical Warfare turned a corner over the summer and has picked up four wins in his last six starts. The impressive manner of his win at Sedgefield last time out indicates that the handicapper isn’t close to catching up and more success could be on the cards.

He pulled clear after hitting the front just before the last and Jack Tudor even eased him down before the line. Scoring off a mark of 97 that day, an 8lb rise is not insignificant but this race looks very winnable and he’s one to keep on side for the time being.

David Pipe has had thirty runners at Newcastle in total throughout his career and six of those have been successful. A strike-rate of 20 per cent is respectable, although his two runners in the last five seasons both lost. Chemical Warfare looks like the one to beat in this race and he should go close once again.

It’s certainly eye-catching that champion jockey Harry Cobden has been booked for the ride and is in fact his only mount of the day. That’s a good reason to be confident and connections won’t want to come home empty-handed.
