Coral Gold Cup: Liam bids to follow up with 12/1 shot after a 20/1 winner last year

Liam Bramall tipped the 2023 winner of Newbury’s Coral Gold Cup winner at 20/1 and may have found the perfect horse to side with this year. It’s sure to be another cracking renewal and Ben Pauling’s runner looks more than ready to take the spoils. Available at 12/1 at time of writing, the horse in question is a second season chaser with the perfect profile. Why not check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing, as we’ve already tipped up an 18/1 accumulator this week.

Coral Gold Cup

Henry’s Friend (12/1, bet365) managed to win twice over hurdles and was particularly impressive when winning his maiden by 20 lengths. Ben Pauling’s gelding went on to finish second in a Grade 2 novice hurdle a couple of starts later and returned to winning ways at Doncaster in the spring.

It wasn’t until he went over fences that the seven-year-old really took off however and he was particularly progressive last term. Grade 2 success in the Reynoldstown at Ascot was the peak of his achievements last year and that performance indicates he has enough class to feature in this sort of race.

He probably wouldn’t want the ground to be too testing but won at this meeting on soft ground last term and shouldn’t be too inconvenienced by similar conditions here. Connections were happy enough with his seasonal reappearance here over hurdles and Pauling said that the run put him ‘spot on’ for this.

Improving second season chasers tend to fair pretty well and last year’s winner had a very similar profile. It’s therefore worth noting that Henry’s Friend comes into the race with a 9lb lower mark than 2023’s victor.
