The weights for Aintree’s Grand National in April were recently announced and there are definitely some interesting revelations. Now would be a good time to look at the horses that are particularly well handicapped and connections will be delighted with these marks. With this in mind, we’ve picked out three eye-catching contenders that should have every chance at the weights. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
Gordon Elliott’s gelding never quite fulfilled his potential as a Grade 1 chaser earlier in his career. Connections switched focus to Cheltenham’s Cross Country Chase last season and he ran a cracker behind stablemate Delta Work in March. He’s been trained with two races in mind this year; another Cross Country challenge and the Grand National. Having been allotted 10-12 for the National, he could be very well handicapped.
Current odds: 20-1
It very well could have been a career best effort from this horse when winning the Cotswold Chase at Cheltenham last time out and it was certainly a cracking trial for the National! Willie Mullins’ eight-year-old was only put up 2lb for that performance and that might underestimate him. Although there’s unlikely to be much room for manoeuvre with 11-4, there could be a little room and that might make all the difference.
Current odds: 25-1
Gavin Cromwell’s Vanillier was catapulted up the market into outright favouritism after the weights were announced. He stayed on eye-catchingly well to finish second behind Corach Rambler in the race last year and is only 4lb higher this time around. Vanillier is 9lb better off with that rival now and you can certainly see why he’s become a popular choice.
Current odds: 11-1
