The eagerly anticipated Flat debut of Constitution Hill takes place at Southwell on Friday and it’s not to be missed. With a substantial £40,000 prize fund on offer, the race has attracted plenty of interest. We’ve assessed the chances of all the runners and the probability of Constitution Hill coming out on top. Take a look at our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
1. Gambino
Dan Skelton’s runner won a Gowran maiden on debut for previous connections and went on to finish second in a handicap over an extended 1m4f last time out. A rating of 83 suggests he might be useful and a big run can’t be ruled out.
2. Square Necker
Square Necker is an intriguing proposition, having gone close on debut before winning a Dundalk maiden over this trip in December. He looks promising and is likely to be in the mix.
3. Constitution Hill
Nicky Henderson’s stable star probably still possesses a big engine, it’s just jumping hurdles that appears to be the issue. Provided the trip isn’t too sharp, the nine-year-old should be too good for them here.
4. Daddy Long Legs
Willie Mullins couldn’t resist sending a runner over and Ryan Moore has been booked for the ride about Daddy Long Legs. he’s had two previous runs on the Flat and finished third behind Carmers at Ballinrobe back in May.
5. Grazeon Sunshine
John & Sean Quinn’s runner did win a Sedgefield bumper in good style back in December but may have his work cut out for him in this particularly warm race.
6. Mr McLoughlan
Jack Jones’ runner has won three of his six starts over hurdles, with the last of those coming off a mark of 118. It’s hard to know what to expect here but you would imagine he has a bit to find.
7. Nardaran
He made one start on the Flat in France for Francis-Henri Graffard, finishing third at Saint-Cloud, and he has also won three times over hurdles. You would imagine he’s unlikely to make the frame however.
8. Roadlesstravelled
This horse has a proper National Hunt pedigree and is a point-to-point winner. A Flat novice on the all-weather probably isn’t his cup of tea so he’s best watched, despite being a graded winner over hurdles.
9. Star Artist
Unraced on the Flat, Hughie Morrison’s seven-year-old has run in a couple of bumpers but his National Hunt rating makes him hard to fancy here.
10. Tripoli Flyer
Fergal O’Brien is a shrewd operator and this horse won a bumper on the all-weather back in 2024. That experience will stand him in good stead and he’s also a Grade 2 winner over hurdles.
12. Masked Mistress
She won a couple of bumpers earlier on in the season but was a well beaten last of four in a Flat novice at Lingfield last time out and is therefore likely to struggle once again.
13. Miracles do Happen
Tom Lacey’s mare is winless in six starts under rules but did manage to finish second in a bumper at Ludlow in October. Others are definitely preferred and she’s nowhere near the top of the list.
14. Tres Bien
Tres Bien hasn’t shown much in seven starts under rules but her best effort came in a bumper a Newton Abbot, where she was third by five lengths. She’s a big price and it’s easy to see why.
