The big story of the day is the big gamble on a runner in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot on Wednesday as Ombudsman was subject to a big punt, taking over from Daryz at the head of the betting market.
Daryz, who won the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe last year, has been weak in the betting all day due to the flurry of money for Ombudsman, who was as large as 2/1 for the contest last week, but is now the 11-8 favourite and could still shorten further.
Ombudsman is a top-class horse who won his first Group 1 at the very first attempt when powering home to win this race last year at odds of 7/1. Trained by the Gosdens, he then went on to win the International Stakes at York in August and has won both of his outings this year to date, the Dubai Turf and Brigadier Gerard. William Buick will take the ride again sporting the Godolphin silks.
We have already touched on Daryz who got the better of Minnie Hauk at the death in last year’s Arc and he has also showed plenty of pace in the Ganay and Aga Khan wins this year. Whether he will be as effective on this quicker ground remains to be seen.
Almaqam is another with a live each-way chance. He finished third to Calandagan and Ombudsman in last year’s Champion Stakes over C&D and won the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Currragh on return. Bay City Roller, who finished second, boosted the form when bolting up in the Coronation Cup since.
