bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown: preview, free tip and outsider for the race

The big story of the weekend could be Kitty’s Light, who bids to finish off the season by winning the bet365 Gold Cup for the second season in a row for trainer Christian Williams. He ran a cracker when finishing fifth in the Aintree Grand National this month and has every chance. The top prize of £95,659 makes the bet365 Gold Cup a hugely competitive race.

Willie Mullins Contenders

The master of Closutton will run three in the race. Minella Cocooner was third behind Intense Raffles in Irish Grand National Chase at Fairyhouse when last seen and will see out this trip no bother. Interestingly, Paul Townend has opted to stick with Nick Rockett, who finished behind his stablemate in that race when seventh, but the slight drop back in trip could be a plus. Aime Desjy is the other representative, a horse who was impressive when winning a beginners’ chase at Gowran in March and ran well in the Topham at Aintree last time.

Free Tips

At a huge price, Flash Collonges should be able to outrun his odds. Bryony Frost is in brilliant form of late and if she gets a soft lead on the front end on Paul Nicholls’ runner, he should run a big race. He was going well in the Scottish National when a faller last season and runs off a workable mark. The other horse worth a mention is Le Milos, who will be trying for his life. Dan Skelton’s runner attracted lots of market support when 13th behind Monmiral in the Pertemps Final at Cheltenham last month, but he was bang there turning in.
