The Clarence House Chase at Ascot might only have four runners this year but it’s warming up to be an absolute belter. Make sure you check out our free horse racing tips for the weekend and read on for our runner-by-runner guide and free tip for the big race on Saturday.
1. Boothill
Jockey: Bryan Carver
Trainer: Harry Fry
High-class chaser landed a premier handicap and the Hurst Park Handicap Chase at this track early last season and was only beaten a length and a half by Jonbon in the Shloer Chase at Cheltenham on his return. Fell when travelling well in the Desert Orchid at Kempton when last seen and has been highly tried at this level. Up against it.
2. Edwardstone
Jockey: Tom Cannon
Trainer: Alan King
Former Arkle winner was an impressive winner of the Game Spirit Chase at Newbury last season but he has been well below his best since. Had to concede 20lb so Soul Icon when runner-up at Kempton last time but it will be a surprise if he’s up to winning this.
3. Energumene
Jockey: Paul Townend
Trainer: Willie Mullins
Dual Queen Mother Champion Chase winner bounced back from a 593-day absence when forging clear to win the Hilly Way at Cork last month, left clear at the last after subsequent King George winner Banbridge was a faller. He jumped particularly well and looks sure to be Jonbon’s main danger here.
4. Jonbon
Jockey: Nico de Boinville
Trainer: Nicky Henderson
Eleven wins from 13 starts over fences with his only three career blips coming at Cheltenham. The eight-time Grade 1 winner impressed when landing the Tingle Creek by eight lengths at Sandown when last seen and it will take a top performance to get him beat here.
Verdict
A match race between Jonbon and Energumene and the former can come out on top for trainer Nicky Henderson. He is unbeaten away from Cheltenham and still probably doesn’t get the level of respect he deserves.
