Ascot Champions Day is nearly upon us and as ever, the maestro Aidan O’Brien has a monster team of horses to go to war with on what should be a fabulous day of top class racing. As ever, make sure that you check out out free horse racing tips for the day to day and weekend action. Let’s delve into O’Brien’s main contenders.
Stay True won on debut at Leopardstown in April and has run with credit in good races since, doing the best of the O’Brien-trained quartet in the Great Voltigeur and just outstayed by stablemate Scandinavia in the St Leger. There’s a chance this trip is a stretch but he has a squeak.
O’Brien has two in here but the market would suggest at present that Mission Central is slightly the preferred to stablemate Kansas. A wide-margin winner of a 28-runner maiden at the Curragh in August, he won a Group 3 there after that before a below-par effort in the Flying Childers. He could bounce back.
O’Brien hasn’t won this race since Magical won it in 2018 but Bedtime Story is out to buck the trend. The daughter of Frankel had a brilliant juvenile campaign but she has regressed this year and will need to improve a chunk to win. Stablemate Ballet Slippers is hard to fancy.
January and Exactly have pretty much no chance here so the yard will be hopeful that The Lion In Winter is back to his brilliant best. Three-year-olds have a brilliant record in the race and he took a step back in the right direction when a narrow third in a French Group 1 on latest.
Probably O’Brien’s best chance of the day is Delacroix, who is a perfect four from four over this trip and was last seen winning the Irish equivalent. It should be a belter of a contest.
