Adrian’s Cheltenham Festival Tracker: ’14-1 too big for Supreme Novices’ Hurdle’

Douvan wins the 2015 Supreme Novices Hurdle at Cheltenham

Welcome to my Cheltenham Festival 2022 tracker where I will be keeping a log of all of my ante-post bets. We are now well into November which is the real start of the jump season proper. This coming weekend is the November Meeting at Prestbury Park and we will gain some vital clues ahead of the big week in March.

I will have a selection for all of my followers every week and will only choose one horse per race. All of my horses will be found at the bottom of my weekly article. So let’s move on to my first selection which comes in arguably the most exciting race of the week.

Supreme Novices’ Hurdle

After having a good look at the race, there’s a couple I am against. Willie Mullins’ Kilcruit is the current market leader but I think he will end up in the Ballymore. He got outpaced a bit in the Champion Bumper when rallying gamely behind Sir Gerhard for a finish. Tackling hurdles here over the same trip, I just don’t think he has the cruising speed to win a Supreme. Mind you, I thought the same about Appreciate It and we all know how that turned out.

Nicky Henderson’s Jonbon is very interesting. He was extremely impressive when winning his bumper at Newbury back in March and could be anything. Nonetheless, he is very short in the market. Sir Gerhard won the Champion Bumper here and of the Mullins pair, I would tend to lean toward him over Kilcruit even though he got a tad fortunate that day when beating his stablemate.

The one horse that jumps out to me at the prices is the Gavin Cromwell-trained My Mate Mozzie. The five-year-old was a wide margin winner of a 25-runner Punchestown bumper in April and is a perfect two from two over hurdles, running out an eight length winner at Punchestown before winning a Navan Grade 3 by 10 lengths last weekend. The only concern I would have is that he has a tendency to jump out to his right. Hopefully connections can get that sorted out by March and if they do then they have a real chance.

Selection: My Mate Mozzie – 1pt win @ 14-1 (General)
