Charlie Johnston isn’t afraid to send his runners far afield and he’s set to do so again on Sunday. He sends two runners from his North Yorkshire base down to Goodwood. The 529-mile round trip is a substantial one and connections will be looking for some compensation.
If both were to win, the combined £46,000 first place prize money would certainly make it a profitable trip. It could also be significant that title-chasing Rossa Ryan has been booked to ride both. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
Benacre (9-2, William Hill) is yet to win this season but he did come very close in a Listed race at Newmarket back in May. It also bodes well for his chances that he’s a previous course winner as the undulations here at Goodwood don’t suit every horse. He tries 1m4f for the first time here which is a very interesting move. There’s not much evidence in his pedigree that it will suit but he shaped as if he would stay further over 1m2f at Chelmsford last time out.
The Gatekeeper (6-1, William Hill can certainly be very hit or miss, much like many of Charlie Johnston’s horses. He ran a cracker over course and distance earlier this month and was narrowly denied in a very competitive race, when finishing second. A repeat of that effort off a 2lb higher mark here may well be enough to take this. This horse is yet to win over a mile but should be more than capable of doing so. His last win came off a 3lb lower mark and he should be competitive once again.
