One runner at Nottingham on Tuesday was an extremely impressive winner when scoring at Ffos Las last time out. The horse in question scored by 27 lengths and you would imagine the handicapper is preparing a substantial rise in the weights for him. Connections are understandably keen to get him out again before he is reassessed. Carrying just a 5lb penalty here, this horse should be extremely well-in. Golden Shot (6-5, William Hill) is the horse in question and he has the typical profile of a Sir Mark Prescott-trained stayer. He began his career in novice and maiden company back in 2021 and failed to shine over woefully inadequate trips. The handicapper gave him an initial mark of 56 and he won his first two handicap starts over 1m6f very easily back in September.
It has been a solid campaign so far for this lightly raced four-year-old and he won at Ayr on seasonal debut off a mark of 72. Following that up with a narrow second at York in July, he was only beaten by a neck that day. It was a completely different story at Ffos Las last time out however and he absolutely bolted up by a massive margin of 27 lengths.
There didn’t appear to be any fluke about that performance which is frightening, considering he reappears here under a 5lb penalty. 20lb probably wouldn’t have stopped him that day and he should prove very hard to beat if turning up in a similar vein of form. Sir Mark Prescott thrives with this type of horse and there should be plenty more to come.
