Punters are in for a rare treat today as there are two monster gambles unfolding across Wednesday’s racing. The first is at Lingfield where one runner has been smashed into 11-1, having been as big as 40-1 the previous evening. Navan has a 50-1 shot that has been backed into just 14-1. We’ve combined these into a 179-1 each-way double. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
Little Earl (11-1, bet365) is the subject of sustained market support at Lingfield on Wednesday morning. Ruth Carr’s gelding has shown little in his two starts for this yard. The first of those can be forgiven as he may well have needed the run on his first start since September. However, his effort over 6f at Newcastle last time out was below-par. Only beating one horse home, he was beaten by over four lengths.
There is one nugget of form from his two-year-old days that looks intriguing. He finished second in a Listed race at Sandown back in May 2021 and the winner went on to claim the Phoenix Stakes later that year. It’s fair to say we haven’t seen a lot since but he is sliding down the weights.
Sandyman (14-1, bet365) has a succession of duck eggs next to his name, which makes the volume of market support all the more intriguing. 50-1 was available for this horse on Tuesday evening and you can certainly see why. Connections have even tried hurdling with him but to no avail. The fact that he has failed to place in 12 starts on the all-weather suggests an artificial surface isn’t for him.
Now returning to turf, a grass surface should be more to his liking. His last win came off this mark at Doncaster in March 2022, when trained in Britain by Mick Appleby. That’s the one thing his supporters will be banking on and perhaps that’s the reason the money has come for him.
