There’s a competitive meeting at Newcastle on Tuesday evening, despite the low grade of the races. This has been boosted by the presence of some significant southern raiders. Andrew Balding, Archie Watson and Charlie Fellowes are all sending some intriguing runners up the north east. These runners are being sent on hefty 595, 569 and 500-mile round trips and connections will be looking for some compensation. With this in mind, we’ve combined them into a treble. Hildegard (5-1, bet365) represents the Archie Watson yard and this three-year-old is certainly going in the right direction. She has had just six starts so far and was closer than ever to getting off the mark at Wolverhampton last time out. If taking another step forward here, there’s every chance she can get off the mark in this sort of grade.
Star Runner (4-1, Paddy Power) finished third on debut for Andrew Balding at Kempton last time out. He looked a little outpaced but kept on well enough over 7f. That performance suggested that the step up to a stiff mile here could be to his liking. Balding has a healthy strike-rate of 28 per cent at Newcastle so far this season, with five winners from 18 runners.
Reflex (3-1, bet365) showed significant improvement on handicap debut at Wolverhampton last time out, when finishing second. Having not shown much in three previous starts, the switch to handicaps clearly suited. He would have learnt plenty from that experience and further improvement should be on the cards. This looks like an excellent opportunity to get off the mark.
