This is a Class 5 Novice Stakes over 5 furlongs, see our betting tips and the full race preview below.
IN SUMMARY: It may pay to side with an already raced sort in this Novice Stakes and the vote goes to LORD RIDDIFORD. He posted a good effort on racecourse debut to finish second, beaten by only a length and with normal progression sure to follow, he can take advantage here with a nice draw in stall 11. Spoof drops down in grade and is an obvious danger with some fair form to his name and The Right Choice should also run well with a nice pedigree although he may just need this making his racecourse debut today.
ARCHIE PERKINS – Showed very little promise on his racecourse debut over C&D earlier this month. He finished last of ten, beaten 20 lengths having been sent off 66/1 and whilst he should do better here, he should be readily outclassed again with some much better types in opposition. He will do better over further and switched into handicaps for a yard that have a 4% strike rate here.
GO NOW GO NOW – Ran a fair race on debut in similar conditions to this earlier this month. He looked a shade outpaced over the minimum trip so it’s a small surprise he’s kept over this trip today although he should be sharper today and ridden closer to the pace. The stable have an excellent 20% strike rate at Beverley although this doesn’t look like one of their likelier winners and others are preferred.
HAAFDASEE – Dam won as a 2yo over 5 and 6 furlongs and his sire was also a winner at 2 over sprint trips. He should be fairly forward although his stable has a less than impressive record here, particularly in maidens and he’s likely to need his racecourse debut. Market support would be interesting but he is likely to do better over a furlong or two extra and is best watched here today.
LAITH ALAREEN – Increased in value by £33,000 from a yearling to a 2yo, selling on for £60,000 last month. His dam is a lightly-raced sort who achieved 5 placed efforts over 6 furlongs as a 2yo and his sire has produced some nice speedy types so there is quite a bit to like about his overall profile. He’s probably going to need this run having not been in training for particularly long but he’s another that would be of interest with market support.
LORD RIDDIFORD – 27,000 Euro purchase as a yearling and he showed plenty of ability on racecourse debut to finish second of 10 at Pontefract. He was sent off 16/1 that day so it may have come as a small surprise to connections but he travelled well and was only beaten a length by a well-supported rival. He should be dangerous here with normal progression and he deserves plenty of respect in similar conditions today.
MAGIC BUZZ – 15,000 Euro yearling purchase and he ran a modest race on debut. He was green in the early stages and looked outpaced but he stayed on relatively well in the finish and looked to be understanding his job the further he went. He looks like he will improve plenty for that experience and he enters calculations here although the yard only has a 9% strike rate in the past fortnight and that’s slightly off-putting.
PORCHY PARTY – 18,000GNS yearling purchase and he was given an easy ride on debut over C&D earlier this month once beaten. He was only beaten 1 3/4 lengths that day and the yard do well with their 2yo maidens so there is plenty to like about his chances today for a smart stable. They’ve been in moderate form of late with 4 winners from their last 35 runners and he’s likely to be right up there with the pace today.
REINBEAU PRINCE – Dam was a winner on racecourse debut as a 2yo over 7 furlongs. She went on to middle-distances as a 3yo and her sire also provides some stamina having produced more milers than sprinters. It would be unwise to oppose Richard Fahey in 2yo maidens at this time of year but his profile suggests he may want further than this and there may be some value in taking him on today.
SKYVA – Dam was a winner over 5 furlongs as a 2yo and reached a peak rating of 94 in her career. He’s likely to have a decent bit of speed about him and he could be dangerous here for a yard that won this race last year with a nice sort. Tom Eaves rides him on debut (1 win from his last 32 rides) for a yard that are without a winner from their last 20 runners. May be best opposed in this.
SPOOF – Has two good pieces of form to his name including a second placed effort to a nice sort at Windsor just 8 days ago. Callum Shepherd takes over in the saddle today and his 3lb claim puts him well-in on today’s terms and he should be right there now dropped in grade and drawn in stall 2. A hood is applied for the first time today and he should take another step forward here and will be hard to beat.
THE RIGHT CHOICE – Declined in value from a foal to a yearling by 13,000 Euros although he looks like Richard Fahey’s first string. He’s by Choisir so he should have plenty of speed and ability and his dam was a winner over a mile as a 3yo so he should be another forward sort here. Stall 4 is fine and the market will guide best as to his chances in this.
DARK HEDGES – Half-sister to some fair sorts and she was a cheap £6,500 purchase as a yearling. She’s been well-beaten in two starts in novice and maiden company and her SP’s of 66/1 and 100/1 have accurately reflected her performances and similar is expected here. She will do better in handicap company and clearly needs more time.
