This is a competitive Class 6 handicap over 2 miles, see our betting tips and the full race preview below.
IN SUMMARY: He’s going to have to shoulder top weight but TEMPURAN could be a decent bet in this. He steps back up to two miles today and his handicap mark has now fallen to 2lbs below his last winning mark. The tongue tie is fitted today and he could dominate this if that headgear brings out any amount of improvement. Ryan The Giant is in good form of late but he’s a difficult horse to win with whilst any money for Author’s Dream should be respected for a smart stable.
TEMPURAN – Wears a tongue-tie for the first time today and steps back up in trip to 2 miles. He was a little one-paced last time out at Southwell over 1m 6f having been beaten 8 1/2 lengths in a Class 5 contest. This is a much weaker race today and the easiest test he has faced on the flat since December 2015. He won a hurdles race in September last year and now 4lbs lower than his last winning flat mark combined with George Wood’s 5lb claim, he must have a very good chance today.
MR GLOBETROTTER – 10 races without victory and makes only his second start over 2 miles on the flat today. He was beaten 1 3/4 lengths on his previous start over this trip under today’s rider and he looked to show improvement for that test of stamina having been campaigned over 6 and 7 furlongs on the flat previously. That race doesn’t look the strongest and it wasn’t run at a furious pace but he’s not without a chance now trying this trip again with a decent 5lb claimer aboard (1 win from last 6 rides).
LINEMAN – Trainer has a dismal 3% strike rate here and her runner has had several chances to get off the mark over C&D. He’s only won twice in 36 runs and although he was only beaten 1/2 length over 1m 6f around here in December, he was receiving his rider’s claim and he’s not the type to expect similar efforts off. He’ll get a good pace to aim at here but he’s an unreliable sort and others make more appeal.
CAPE SPIRIT – There haven’t been many 22-race maidens at the Andrew Balding yard across his career but he continues to persist with this mare by Cape Cross. She’s stepped up to 2 miles today and one can only imagine connections believe that may just bring out a little more improvement needed to win. She did place over 1m 6f here two starts ago off 2lbs lower than this and there has been plenty of cash around for her having been sent off the 7/4 and 11/4 favourite on both her recent runs. She’s probably got a chance on form but she’s very difficult to win with and is tricky to recommend.
THE QUATERJACK – Makes his seasonal return today following a six-month break off the racetrack. He’s arguably on a good mark now racing off 55 having once been rated in the 70’s but he’s been regressive over the past couple of seasons and hasn’t won since November 2015. That came over 2 miles at Southwell so he definitely stays the trip but it’s hard to recommend him today on his first run back for this yard who have only sent out 2 winners from 44 runners here.
AUTHOR’S DREAM – He’s an exposed sort having only raced four times to date. He’s been off the track for 301-days and was last seen finishing well-behind in a Salisbury handicap off a mark of 57 last May. He steps up markedly in trip today and he’s got the pedigree to suggest that should suit and a mark of 55 may be exploited at some point for a yard that know the time of day. It’s hard to know what to expect off this long break but the yard have sent out a winner from their only runner in the past fortnight and a good value claimer is booked. Interesting with market support.
COLD FUSION – One win from 20 starts came over 10 furlongs at Newmarket in July of last year and she has only placed twice since then. Her subsequent efforts have been very inconsistent and she’s dropped through the handicap to a mark of 53 which puts her 11lbs lower than her only winning mark. She was tried in a selling hurdle at Exeter just four days ago and finished pulled up so it’s incredibly difficult to envisage victory here although this probably is her level. Good claimer in Hollie Doyle booked (2 wins from her last 8 rides).
RYAN THE GIANT – Trainer without a win from 17 runners in the last fortnight but his runner here arrives in good form. He’s a son of Fastnet Rock and has thrived of late over the extended 2 miles at Newcastle finishing 132. He’s been raised 2lbs for that placed effort on his last run when he was beaten a nose and he’s not the easiest of rides and needs to be delivered really late which doesn’t make him the most attractive of betting options. His overall record of 1 win from 27 rides is rather off-putting and it’ll take a really good ride to get him home in front today so he’s best watched.
OYSTER CARD – Without a win in 15 starts although he has shown modest improvement for a step up in trip. He’s a type that needs things to fall perfectly for him and Ben Curtis will be keen to get plenty of cover for him and he does receive plenty of weight from his rivals now racing off 46 for the third time. The yard have been in great recent form (6 winners from 29 runners in the past fortnight) which is a positive but he’s another tricky ride and difficult to recommend.
