There are a whopping 63 races taking place across Britain and Ireland on New Years’ Day, seven of which are live on ITV. That means we’re back with our usual feast of potentially overpriced runners. Liam Bramall has picked out three horses who should be capable of outrunning their odds, including a Nigel & Willy Twiston-Davies runner in the big race at Cheltenham who brings some excellent form to the table. Take a look at our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
Heart Above (20/1, Betfred) has already won twice this season, so don’t write him off just yet. The most recent of those successes came over 2m5f at Kelso and he won with plenty in hand that day. Dianne Sayer’s eight-year-old was disappointing over two miles last time out but going back up to 2m4f here will definitely help and he’s entitled to make the frame.
Matata (12/1, bet365) may have been unfairly overlooked here, as he’s been running in some hot races over the last couple of seasons. Unexposed over this trip, he’s a three-mile point winner and his only recent run over 2m4f came in the Melling Chase. He’s been dropped a couple of pounds since his last run, where he finished third, and the gelding looks ready for a return to the winners’ enclosure.
Tommy’s Oscar (14/1, bet365) was a Grade 2 winner at the peak of his powers and although the veteran hasn’t won for over a year, he now looks very well treated. Ann Hamilton’s gelding has two wins and a second to his name in just four starts at Musselburgh and he’s got the ability to run a big race.
