7.00 Chelmsford

Division two of the competitive 6f handicap at Chelmsford tonight sees a field of seven runners go to post, but it’s the Jim Boyle-trained Lightning Bear who stands out as the biggest market mover of the day, backed from 14/1 overnight all the way into a top price of 4/1 now.

It is a major surprise to see this 3yo run off a mark of 70 in a handicap considering the start he had to his career last season when trained by Jack Davison.

Third behind subsequent Breeders’ Cup winner Magnum Force on debut at Cork in August 2024, Lightning Bear showed electric speed at Down Royal next time when landing a 5f Down Royal maiden on fast ground.

He then finished third in the very valuable Goffs 500 before being sold on for 58,000gns, and ever since then, his career has spiralled downhill since moving to Britain.

Lightning Bear has run in five handicaps so far for Jim Boyle, starting out off a mark of 92, but after some dismal performances he is now down to just 70. Surely, if any of his former ability remains, he should walk this contest.
