The Listowel Harvest Festival starts on Sunday and Paul Townend goes for one ride

Paul Townend has an incredible 41 per cent strike-rate at Listowel Racecourse in the last five seasons, which is nearly a winner from every two rides, and it has to be of interest that the champion jockey travels to the County Kerry track for just one ride on the card on Sunday afternoon, the start of the Listowel Harvest Festival! Let’s take a look at the horse in more detail.

2.58 Listowel

Willie Mullins sends three to Listowel on Sunday but the only one Townend will be riding is the big favourite for the Irish EBF Mares’ Hurdle (2.58), as the JP McManus-owned Jalila Moriviere bids to beat four other rivals, including a stablemate, in the 2m4f contest.

A dual winner on heavy ground when trained in France, one over hurdles and one win on the Flat, the mare got off the mark at the second time of asking for her current yard when winning a three-runner affair on soft ground at Limerick in March.

It was by no means a strong race, but the runner-up Mongibello went on to win a novices’ hurdle at Perth by 12 lengths subsequently so the form has a bit of substance at least, which is a good sign.

The McManus runner then finished fourth in a Listed handicap hurdle at Punchestown after that, before a respectable sixth in the Galway Hurdle. This step back up in trip could be just what the doctor ordered and she could be hard to beat.

Her stablemate Adela Icon is no back number and arrives here after bolting up at Bellewstown. It may be a surprise that Townend didn’t pick her but he made that choice for a reason.
