He might be a bit of an under the radar jockey but you might be surprised to hear Ben Jones is a jockey who could be worth following at Ascot on Friday. Jones rode three winners from five rides at the track last season which is a 60% strike-rate, and he has three solid chances at the Berkshire course on Friday. Let’s take a look at the three runners below and you can find all of today’s free horse racing tips live on the website now!
Jones’ first ride will be aboard the Ben Pauling-trained Followcato in the 2m6f maiden hurdle. Purchased for £72,000 after finishing second in a point, the five-year-old finished third in a bumper at Huntingdon on rules debut back in April. Sent off favourite on the day, better was expected. He had a tough assignment when fourth behind Mister Meggit on his hurdling debut at Aintree on return but should strip fitter now heading into these calmer waters.
Johnnywho might be a tough nut to crack in the feature Grade 2 novices’ chase over 2m3f, but Ben Pauling’s Personal Ambition will be on hand to take advantage of any mess-ups. The three-time hurdles winner won a Grade 2 at Kelso in that code last season and although he’s yet to reach the same heights in two starts over fences, it’s early days.
Jones’ final ride is aboard It’s Top in the closing Listed bumper. Oliver Signy’s gelding stuck to his task well when winning a Chepstow bumper on debut, and the second has come out to win since, while the third went close subsequently too.
