Mares’ Chase

Apple Away absolutely bolted up at Leicester earlier this week. Lucinda Russell’s mare won by a whopping 31 lengths and the horse back in second is certainly no mug. She made her seasonal reappearance in a warm race at Haydock last month and the impressive winner was unfortunate not to go in again at Cheltenham on Friday.

This mare caused somewhat of a surprise when winning a Grade 1 novice hurdle at Aintree in the Spring, with the likes of Iroko and Stay Away Fay in behind her. She retains plenty of potential and has the scope to improve further over fences.

The Mares’ Chase isn’t the most competitive affair at Cheltenham and it could prove to be a penalty kick for Apple Away, if she continues on her current trajectory. The Brown Advisory would be much more competitive and often proves to be a gruelling test. If lining up against her fellow mares, she would have every chance at the Festival in March.
