Charles Byrnes is certainly an enigmatic presence and it’s important to take note when the money comes for his runners. The Irish trainer yet to have any runners at Hereford but that looks set to change on Wednesday. Byrnes runs two there and both appear to have very good chances. With this in mind, we’ve combined them into a double for you to consider. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.
Reverend Hubert (1-2, bet365) has had five starts over hurdles thus far and he got off the mark with his head in his chest at Downpatrick in August. The second has since boosted the form by winning its next two starts. Conditions were pretty quick at Downpatrick that day which suggests the fast ground on the hurdles track here will suit.
He followed that victory up with two solid third-place efforts at Listowel and Cheltenham. This race represents a significant drop in grade and provides the perfect opportunity to return to winning ways. It’s difficult to see him getting beaten here and Adam Wedge is a shrewd jockey booking.
Redwood Queen (7-4, William Hill) won over hurdles for Noel Kelly before joining Byrnes back in May. She opened her account for the yard at Sligo in August and was well-supported that day, scoring by just short of a length. The six-year-old mare is still unexposed and there could be more to come.
It was a fair effort when third in a competitive race at Punchestown last time out and she shaped as if going back up in trip would suit. This event looks significantly easier and she should be there or thereabouts, with the in-form Finn Lambert taking 5lb off.
