IN SUMMARY: We haven’t seen NISSER (2/1) since his comfortable 5f course maiden win last summer but it’s likely Richard Hannon will have him straight enough for today’s handicap debut and his potential to progress earns him the vote. Cincuenta Pasos is respected after his good effort over C&D a week ago but isn’t certain to get the strong pace he probably needs. Justice First has done very well over longer trips on the AW since the winter and today’s drop back in trip is not a significant concern, but it remains to be seen whether he’ll be seen in the same light back on turf. Ower Fly, the selection’s stablemate, has made an excellent start to the season on slow ground but he’s another that needs to prove today’s underfoot conditions are suitable.
Sydney Ruffdiamond – First of three 5f wins for Richard Hannon last season was gained here and last month’s midfield finish over that trio at Goodwood represented a satisfactory seasonal/stable debut; will probably be fine back over 6f but needs to produce a career-best performance to defy current mark.
Cincuenta Pasos – Very versatile regarding ground and built upon encouraging seasonal debut when staying-on third over C&D a week ago; remains on career-high mark and, kept to today’s trip, is reliant on others setting a strong pace, but there’s a good chance he’ll give another good account.
Cool Bahamian – Usually held up for a late run and will require a strong pace and some luck; currently only 1lb above mark of which he scored at Newmarket (6f, good to soft) last summer but he’s been off since a moderate AW run in December and may need today’s outing.
Sir Billy Wright – Both wins in 2015 came over 5f but he stays 6f well; fit from the AW when respectable sixth back on turf at Leicester (6f, good to soft) last month; didn’t get the best of runs that day and is 1lb lower here but would make more appeal on slower ground.
Justice First – Has made steady progress and won three times over longer trips on the AW since the winter, most recently at Wolverhampton (7f) last month; has the speed to cope with today’s return to 6f but needs to prove he can transfer his improvement back to turf.
Nisser – Absent since pushed clear to win 5f course maiden in July, his third start; faces much tougher assignment in this good-quality handicap but is already proven over 6f and has obvious potential to make progress this season; one to consider.
Ower Fly – Disappointed on last two of five 2yo starts but drew nicely clear to cause 25/1 surprise over C&D (soft) last month; had to settle for second under 6lb penalty at Bath (5.7f, soft) a few days later; full 8lb rise has now kicked in and he may not be seen to the same effect on today’s much faster ground.
Force – Won his maiden in first-time hood at Haydock (6f, good to soft) in September and signed off with creditable third on AW/nursery debut at Chelmsford the following month; could easily have more to offer if fully revved up.
Rosy Morning – Has only raced six times and already has a very inconsistent record; looked good when winning her maiden on Polytrack at Chelmsford last summer and put in decent front-running shift there on last month’s seasonal debut, but finished last (albeit on soft ground) at Thirsk nine days ago and it’s hard to know what to expect today.
