Tips for Ffos Las Races

Built on the site of an old open cast coal mine near Llanelli in South Wales, Ffos Las racecourse is one of three courses in Wales. Only opened in 2009, it is the most modern National Hunt course in the UK. It now hosts a number of both Flat and National Hunt meetings each year.

Course: The course for both jumps and flat races is a one mile, four furlong left handed oval, with two relatively easy bends. A chute on the home straight allows for a straight run in for five and six furlong races. Our Ffos Las tips tend to look for galloping types, as the nature of the course allows them time to get into stride and maintain their speed round the bends.

In the past, Ffos Las was perhaps most famous for it’s boggy going, with heavy rain leading to extremely tough going. The West Wales National in 2015 saw just two of ten horses finish, with the winner (Bob’s Ford) finishing a full 99 lengths clear of the only other finisher, who was nearly pulled up. Drainage work in 2015 has largely fixed this issue, although following extreme weather it can still become very heavy.

Draw Bias: The wide, flat track both contribute to a fair course meaning no draw bias for our tips to consider.

Feature Race: The main race of the year is the grandly named “Welsh Champion Hurdle”, run over two miles in October. Previously removed from the horse racing calendar in 2003 due to a lack of entries, Ffos Las revived the race as a Limited Handicap before a temporary attempt at increasing the distance.

Recent winners include Cheltenham Festival stalwart The New One and the well known Garde La Victoire, winner of multiple Class 1 races.
