3.05pm Sandown Tips & Betting Preview 21/07/2016

The feature race on Thursday’s Sandown card in a 7f Listed contest for 2yo fillies. Our betting tips focus on a Hannon-trained runner bidding to make amends for a disappointing run at Royal Ascot. Read our race preview for the full story.

IN SUMMARY: GRIZZEL takes on a couple of unbeaten rivals and needs to bounce back from a disappointing performance at Royal Ascot but her defeat of Clem Fandango in the Hilary Needler over 5f at Beverley in May is the best piece of form on offer here and, with her pedigree giving a strong indication that today’s step up in trip will suit, it can be argued she should be favourite. That said, Calare has enormous potential to build on her debut success and On Her Toes and is clearly heading in the right direction. Urban Fox has looked far from straightforward on her first two starts but has managed to win on both occasions and evidently has a good engine. The selection’s stablemate, Paulownia, is bred for middle-distance trips but has plenty of speed and is also shortlisted.

1 Calare – Out of a Group 3 winner and readily justified warm favouritism in five-runner novice contest at Doncaster (7f, good to soft) last month; the bare form is nothing to get too excited about but she holds a Group 2 entry for next month and is open to any amount of progress.

2 Grizzel – Has a point to prove after finishing well down the field when quite well fancied for the Group 3 Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot last month but the form of her win in a valuable conditions race at Beverley (5f, good to firm) two starts ago had been well advertsied by the runner-up and her pedigree strongly suggests today’s step up in trip will suit.

3 Hellofahaste – Finished strongly to win Salisbury novice race (6f, good to firm) last month, her second start, and stuck well to her task when very creditable second in Listed company at Newmarket (6f, heavy) on latest outing; needs to prove she can match that level of performance back on fast ground but seems very likely to by suited by the extra yardage here.

4 High On Love – Delivered on debut promise when making all under hands-and-heels ride at Windsor (6f, good to firm) in May but that form is nothing out of the ordinary and she was unable to land a significant blow at Royal Ascot last month; up in trip today; others have more pressing claims.

5 Mia Cara – Non-runner

6 On Her Toes – Eased down when winning her maiden at Windsor (6f, soft) last month, her second start, and now bids for a hat-trick after bagging small-field Pontefract nursery a couple of weeks ago; up in class today but evidently heading in the right direction and today’s longer trip ought to suit.

7 Paulownia – Quite stoutly bred but showed speed on her debut when runner-up at Newmarket (6f, soft) last month and made pleasing progress to open her account at Ascot (7f, good to firm) 12 days ago; needs to improve again to pose a threat at this level, but that’s certainly not out of the question.

8 Urban Fox – Flashed her tailed when winning on debut at Yarmouth (6f, good to firm) last month and looked rather wayward in the closing stages when following-up at Kempton (7f, AW) three weeks ago; evidently has some quirks, and faces a tougher assignment here, but there’s plenty of ability there too.

myracing Forecast Prices: 11/4 Calare, On Her Toes, 4/1 Grizzel, 11/2 Paulownia, 6/1 Urban Fox, 10/1 Hellofahaste, 25/1 High On Love
