Located in the small village of Cartmel in Cumbria, this racecourse punches well above its weight in terms of attendance, often gaining crowds of over 20,000. It features the longest run in of any racecourse in the UK, with the final fence a full four furlongs from the winning post.
Cartmel was the site of the infamous “Gay Future” coup, involving switching horses before a race and backing a well handicapped horse in doubles and trebles with other horses which were then declared non runners.
Course: Left handed and sharp, Cartmel is a tricky course with a tight bend at the end of the back straight and the aforementioned extremely long run in on the chase course. Our Cartmel tips are often front runners, as it can be notoriously difficult to pass horses on the run in.
Feature Meetings: Cartmel has two feature meetings; the three day May meeting, and the two day July meeting. Both operate a “race day, day off, race day” rotation policy, allowing visitors to enjoy the Lake District (and also giving staff time to turn the course around for the next day’s racing). Both feature a fairground in the middle of the track.
Feature Race: The Cumbria Crystal Cup Handicap Hurdle is the most valuable race at Cartmel each year; taking place in July, it’s run over two miles, six furlongs and is always competitive.
myracing will have tips for every Cartmel meeting as well as the Crystal Cup, posted on our website the night before.
