Willie Mullins is 5/6 in the Champion Bumper – He has five chances on Wednesday

Willie Mullins is the man to follow in most Cheltenham Festival races but the Champion Bumper has been particularly kind to him in recent years. Ireland’s best National Hunt trainer has had the winner in five of the last six renewals and he has five runners in Day 2’s concluding race this time around. Here we assess the chances of his representatives and one horse in particular has a massive chance. Check out our free tips page as well as our Cheltenham Festival Day 2 selections.

Main contenders

Patrick Mullins is on board Love Sign d’Aunou and he has been the market leader for some time. There was loads to like about his wide-margin success in a bumper at Naas in January. He was a point-to-point winner before that and appears to have a significant amount of potential.

Paul Townend has picked four-year-old Quiryn and he’s related a Group 1-winning stayer on the Flat. Cue Card is the only four-year-old to have won it since 1995 and it’s therefore going to be a pretty big ask. Having said that, he won well at Naas in January.

The Irish Avatar has taken a bit of a walk in the market but Harry Cobden has been booked for the ride and he beat a subsequent winner by nine lengths on his first start under rules at Navan.

Each-way candidates

The impeccably bred Our Trigger is another four-year-old but he’s a half-brother to Gaelic Warrior. Mullins’ gelding showed a smart turn of foot to score by six lengths at Gowran. Progress seems likely and Arkle-winning jockey Danny Mullins takes the ride.

The Wager is the least fancied of the five runners and he was only beaten by a neck on debut at Punchestown last February. Getting off the mark with a narrow success at Fairyhouse last time out, he probably has plenty to find on that form.

Verdict

Love Sign d’Aunou absolutely destroyed his rivals when winning his bumper and he could be something special. Horses don’t win bumpers by 28 lengths too regularly and he looks like the one to beat.
